Excessive valve noise? 2017 RTS.

I bought a 2017 RTS a few weeks ago, it has around 900 miles on it currently but it's always had a "ticking" noise since purchase. I thought it may be normal but now I've been second guessing myself.

After reading the manual it mentions adjusting the valves if noisy during certain service periods. This is where the noise seems to be coming from. I have removed the top engine cover to take the video.

Does everyone's sound like this?

First post here, so thanks in advance for the info.

Yes it could also be injectors, but never having anything direct injected I'm not sure if the injectors are different than the noise normal injectors make which is just lightly clicking. There is a link to the video above on YouTube

Thanks.

Sounds similar to mine at idle... I just thought it was normal for that engine.

Yep that's direct injection ticking not valves. All normal for today's DI engines. The cover which is off in the video is made to mask it a little too.

Direct injection is at a much higher pressure so they make more noise compared to port injection.

Now, in that video, I hear a high-pitched chirping sound (aside from the birds chirping in the background) that sounds a bit like crickets which reminded me of the following:

There's a TSB 16-013 for all 2016 Pilots and 2017 Ridgelines released 8/4/2016.

SYMPTOM
There is a chirping coming from the engine area with the engine warmed up.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
The high pressure fuel pump is making a chirp.
NOTE: This noise does not impact pump, engine function, or reliability.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the high pressure fuel pump.

This thread got me interested! I thought my new RL was pretty quiet idling with the hood up or down. After reading through this thread, I recorded a vid with my old iPhone 5. Holy moly, it sounded like the OP's original video, awful! Something about recorded engine sounds makes them sound much worse than they do to your ear. Even the normal direct injection noise is muted on mine. From what I can tell, these engines have one DI high pressure pump and it looks to be mounted on the left side of the rear cylinder bank at the end of the camshaft.

Yeah, cell phone mics seem to REALLY pick up higher frequencies. I have a deep voice, and when I'm talking on my phone to my wife, she would often hear women's voices from across the room that sounded louder than mine and she thought they were standing right next to me. Had me in a little hot water until we figured out what was going on....

If you really want peace of mind, take it back to the dealer when then have another RL on the lot. Park it next to their RL and take turns idling both trucks. See if there is any difference in how they sound when both are warmed up.

Sounds pretty much like mine. I took it to the dealer who said the sound is normal for Ridgelines.
I didn't really believe him. The next day I received a email from Honda (not dealer) with a quite long
survey about all aspects of the truck. I stated my concern about the engine noise.
It sounds like valves need adjustment to me. Let's see if honda ever gets back to me.
The survey included my email address, and phone number.

Sounds similar to mine. I initially thought the same thing the first time I rolled my window down at the drive-thru.

DI injectors will always be louder than conventional port fuel injectors. Remember that port injectors inject into the intake manifold which is always lower than atmospheric pressure. DI injectors inject into the combustion chamber and have to overcome compression pressure so they have to inject at a higher pressure. You should hear a diesel injector when doing an actuation test with engine off. I now work for a Ski-Doo dealership and the sound of the E-Tec direct injectors in our sleds is also quite loud.

I just noticed the fuel pump chirp today at 3100 miles. I had another chirp but it has a rhythm to it and I've heard it in videos. This one is more at random. I'll let it ride for now because from what I read, it just comes back. My wife's CRV makes a similar chirp on hot summer days. I was concerned at first but my brother in law's CRV made the same noise. So to date, I hear what I think is piston slap at very low rpm when the engine is under load mostly when cold, a rhythmic chirp and now the fuel pump chirp. The DI clicking I hear is normal. When in neutral, I swear I hear a noise like a bad timing belt tensioner. For now I'll categorize myself as OCD crazy and the sounds characteristically normal. My V6 Accord sounds like heaven at idle in gear and out of gear.

I have a bit of chirpyness with mine when warmed up. It's sort of this ryhtmic nature to it with it disappearing at times...maybe like you're describing. Not sure how normal it is and not sure at what level it's considered to be an actual problem vs just normal for this enigine.

I've driven my 2017 RTL for around 7,000 miles and the idle ticking noise appears to be getting more pronounced. Some say it's the fuel injectors, other say maybe the fuel pump. I found an article that mentions the rocker shaft bridge has excessive clearance from the factory for 3.5 V6 Honda engines. They state it's for older models but could it apply to newer ones as well?

I have a 2017 rtl it makes same noise, mostly hear at idle, replaced high pressure fuel pump, still makes a noise at idle after warming up. Sounds like coming from underneath on the left side, when I crawl under truck you can hear it louder. Have at dealer again don't think I'm getting anywhere. If you are at idle you can hear inside truck with windows up, in drive or reverse, if you put in neutral seems to be not as loud.

I beleive its either timing belt issue or transmission related, they have had it at dealer for 3 days fuel pump replaced on first day, called a few minutes ago and said they have 2 techs working oon it, still a noise they can's pin point.

Has the dealership figured out the noise? Had mine at the dealership last week for a noise that they thought might be the fuel pump, so left it for 2 days to order parts and get installed but still making the same noise. It is most noticeable in the cab and also around the driver side wheel well. When brought up to the service manager and technician they stated it might be a belt tensioner but to continue driving the vehicle to see if the noise progresses. Not a good answer but decided to do so or perhaps take to a different dealership in the near future.

I have the same problem. Purchased the vehicle new in January 2017. Two weeks in the chirping sound started. Honda has replaced the high pressure fuel system twice. Worse then ever. Bringing it in to Honda again next week. Funny how the dealer has made no mention of any similar issues with other ridgelines or pilots (even though I had read about this as early as last June). I've had 5 Hondas and have never had any issues until this one. Very frustrating
