Here we go again - check fuel cap.......

For the last week or so I’ve been seeing the dreaded “Check Fuel Cap” warning on my dash screen every time I startup my Ridgeline. I’ve read some of the many posts on this site regarding this issue. Does anyone know if putting on a new cap will solve the problem? The warning originally came on several days after filling up, and I have never in my entire life left a vehicle running while I fill it up. I’ve tried hitting the Reset button when the warning is showing, but it does nothing. Guess I just have to live with it?

This is a mildly annoying issue that I feel shouldn’t be an issue at all on an otherwise stellar vehicle from Honda. My wife’s ’07 Accord has never had this problem. What did they get wrong on the Ridgeline to cause this?

I have filled up again since the original warning started. I have tried taking the cap off and putting it back on several times (clicking it 5 or 6 times to be sure). Nothing seems to help. At least there are no performance issues or anything I have to be really concerned about. It's just annoying!

Weird. My '06 RTL just had the same problem during the same timeframe. Other than this, I have never had a problem with the truck.

I was in San Diegeo a few weeks ago when my “Check Fuel Cap” came on. I stopped, took it off and put it back on. The light stayed on. So I ignored it. The next day, the light was off and hasn't came back on at all. I figured it was due to the difference in weather between San Diego and Phoenix.

UPDATE to my original post:

Yesterday when I left work the check fuel cap warning came on again. I arrived home and the truck sat for about 30 minutes before I headed back out. The warning did not come on this time (for the first time in almost 2 weeks). It's been off ever since. It disappeared as randomly as it appeared!

This alert just happened to me for the first time yesterday. It has been several days since my last fill up and the cap had not been touched. Woke up this morning to the same thing. Reseated the cap a couple of times seems to have made it go away. Is cleaning the gasket the key to resolving this? I wonder if humidity can have an impact on this as we've had a few days of unusual high humidity.

Same problem, same time frame. Shop manual says to drive a distance without moving the accelerator. What a joke, nowhere around here is that desolate! I ignored it like many of the other idiot stuff on there like the TPMS light and it went away. I watch and check my tire pressures, not wait till a light comes on, all are inflated properly. That light will stay on till hell freezes over before I will pay anyone to turn it off.

I drove it Sunday for 15 min, when I got in to drive back, I saw the f cap error, went to get gas since the low gas light was on, it did not go away, I will use it today and find out. I think it has to do with altitude, temperature and maybe humidity like mentioned before.

It seems to go away by itself according to prev posts, I hope that is the case with mine. I do have a computer I bought at costco for $40.00 I may try to reset it if it does not go away. Good Luck! maybe is global warming.

OK, I saw the error again today did everything I could make it go away and nothing.

Here is what got rid of if with mine at least for now, I do not know if it was coincidence or what but this is what I did. I was driving and saw the error blink, I decided to press the select button to scroll and show the trip one, 2, oil life etc, but I left it on, one of trips showing the miles and left it there not where the error was blinking. I arrived to my destination then on the way back, got back in and no light, pressed the select button to scroll through all the displays and the error was gone.

Bottom line: press the select button leave it on any of the trip mileage so it does not display the cap error and on the next start up maybe your cap error will be gone.

I hope I do not see it tomorrow again. He he. Let us know if yours disappears by taking those steps. Good Luck!

No error.
Drove it today, got gas
No cap error anymore on mine from my last post

Well I have a 2010 Honda that is only two weeks old. I have put my second tank of gas and my wife just called and told me the gas cap warning was on. It has just reached around 100 today and this is the first time in hot weather this vehicle has been running. I hope that it is just the hot weather.:act043:

Same thing just happened to me a couple of days ago. The fuel cap message appeared. I live in the DC Metro area, and the last week or so we have had several days with 100+ tempratures and high humidity, and from reading some of the other posts, it seems [weather] to have something to do with the fuel cap message showing up.

Never experienced this with any other Honda vehicle I have owned, could this be just a Ridgeline issue/problem?

This message is totally annoying. My check F cap message won't go away. It flashes everytime I start my truck up. I've reseated the cap several times and to no avail.....it flashes again when I restart the truck.

I got the check fuel cap message yesterday, checked the fuel cap and, whatta know, it wasn't tightened down all the way. I was in a hurry, didn't give it the full turn, where I get at least a 1/2 dozen clicks like I normally do, and it worked it's way loose. Put it back on, gave it good turn, got the clicks, and the next time I started the truck, the message was gone. So, it does work right sometimes...

Message GONE...HA!!!!! Dug my OBD scanner out of the glove box, it read a small EVAP leak. Cleared the codes and wallah, gone.

Mine has been on for 1 week now. I cleaned around the cap area and put a dab of vasoline on it to see what would happen (worked on my Toyota Matrix).... but no sir.... no dice. Think I'll have to track down a code reader and give it a zap and see what happens. If that doesn't work more black tape on the dash board...next to the TPMS light :act010:

I have the same problem too. I bought one of those In Stant Fill gas caps (what a piece of junk) and the flapper broke on it and the mesage came on. I fixed the flapper, but the message was still on. I replaced it with the OE cap and the message is still on.

Has anyone tried a battery cable pull to reset this message?

Replace the gas cap first. If the light remains on, there is a leak somewhere else in the evap system. It might have to be smoke tested in order to determine where the leak is. Don't blame Honda for this, blame you local, state and federal government, big brother as EPA mandates are forcing all manufacturers to have stricter rules to keep gas fumes from venting to atmosphere. Complaints on this range from chk gas cap to gas spraying out when filled up to check engine lights. And it is ALL manufacturers who have crap with this message.
