If your fob battery dies you need the real key. I wouldn't want to take a chance on not having one and being late to an appointment, or worse, stranded in the middle of nowhere. My G1 fob batteries lasted about 8-10 years, but my G2 had a fob battery die after about 2 years. And I want two so my wife and I can each carry one when we travel.

Why not just keep a spare battery for the key fob inside the car?
