LEER cap install

Hey all - I finally got my LEER cap installed. As you can see, I've added a Yakima roof rack. One of the options was to have Thule tracks installed and these work perfectly with the Yakima landing pad 1. I also had the electric lock installed which locks the cap with the auto door locks. One thing I noticed is that due to the very slight downward slope (towards the back) of the cap, the front rack is very slightly higher than the rear rack. This shouldn't be a problem since I also put on the fairing (so I'm not 'catching' any wind while driving) and also, since the bike trays tilt down slightly, it offsets it (from a purely cosmetic standpoint).

Bottom line is my dogs are happy because they get to ride with me again and I'm happy because my interior doesn't look like it was shot with an insulation gun filled with dog hair. About 3500 miles so far and I absolutely love this vehicle.

Let me know if you have any questions.

That REALLY looks nice. What mounts from Yakima did you use to attach to the topper? The top was thick enough to give a solid mount? Thanks for the pictures. How did the install go - a dealer install job? How has it been for weather tightness? Sorry - full of questions today.
Thanks.

Thanks Pete. The Thule tracks are connected to the cap with 8 bolts each side. I used the Yakima landing pad 1 to connect to the tracks and Yakima control towers plug right into those. On the top I have the wire gear basket and the sprocketrocket bike trays. The rack feels rock solid but I don't know the load limit. My rack right now probably weighs ~45 lbs, do with 2 bikes, I'd probably only feel safe putting 50 lbs max on my gear basket (but I usually just put really light stuff up there anyways). As far as weather tightness, it is NOT 100% waterproof. The main area of 'leakage' is the tailgate. It doesn't look like Honda meant for that to be water-proof. Also, around the sides, I get a very slight leak when going through a carwash (and this is with high pressure water coming in straight from the side. I don't think you should worry about the leakage too much (it's very minimal), just don't carry a wedding dress or an open crate of marshmellows back there. I had the dealer install this and was pretty happy with them.

I actually really like the cap and how well it looks in nimbus.
Not to sure at all about the racks as far as looks (kinda makes it look rear heavy) but you are using them for hauling bikes so if not for the 50 lb weight restriction at least they are functional.
Good mod.

Yes - very happy with the cap in general. It definitely 'looks' better without the bike trays on it, they do tend to hang off the back. The good thing is that the cap glass window only opens to horizontal so it doesn't hit the back of the bike trays. Could be my imagination, but it seems my gas mileage went up slightly also.

wow looks like it came off the assembly line that way, but now it looks more like a Suburban.

Nice rig and excellent rack on top!

I have similar Leer and have been a bit concerned with the gap at the cab end of the junction.....I have about a 1/2" gap there on both sides. Dealer says that it is normal but has not ruled out going to Leer. How does yours fit at this poing?

Many thanks...N.Povey

Thanks! I have a similar gap on both sides. From all the pictures I've seen, this seems to be normal. Actually, when I first got this installed the gap was uneven between the 2 sides. I had them fix it on the spot - they just loosened 2 of the J-hooks and readjusted. I wouldn't worry about it since if the gap was any smaller, I'd start to worry about paint rub.

Craigger,

The leer cap looks great! I am very close to pulling the trigger on a Ridgeline (going to the dealer today afterwork).

One of the first things I want to do is to put that cover on the truck.

If you don't mind me asking I have a couple of questions for you.

1. How much did it cost?
2. Did it come painted to match the factory paint, or do you need to take it to the dealer to match the factory paint?
3. Where did you order it from? Online or via a local store?

Thanks for your help and your Ridge looks tough!

Hey guys - thanks for the positive comments. I couldn't be happier with the LEER cap. The main reason I got this is that I wanted to use my Yakima rack for my bikes (I do a lot of bike racing) and I wanted room to bring my family and my dogs wherever I go.

Ki66, to answer your questions:
1. The total was around $2400. I paid $75 for the install, $75 for the autolocking feature (locks cap with the auto door locks), and $175 for the tracks (so I can put my Yakima rack on top). So I guess the base cap was around $2075.
2. The cap price includes matching paint. LEER uses the factory color codes to match paint. To be extra-cautious, my installer sent in my gas cap door so they could do a computerized color scan to get it right.
3. I ordered this through a local dealer here in San Diego. Turnaround time was around 4-5 weeks.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

As xridgelinex points out, the autolock does not lock the tailgate per se. What it does is lock the glass. They install a 'lip' onto the tailgate top, so this blocks the tailgate from opening. This will mostly keep honest people honest, but I think prying with even moderate force will force the tailgate open. Of course, this would probably shatter the glass on the cap. Come to think of it, someone could easily just smash the glass anyway...

If there is something I'm really worried about losing, it goes in the trunk or under the rear seat.

Looks good, I have a steel blue with one rack in the back. Since I have the roof rack I got one rack incase I throw my Kayak or canoe on the top.

I think my mileage did improve.

The Northeast installers do not add the piece on the tailgate to lock it (or at least my installer didn't). IF you pull the tailgate while the top is down I think it would be able to be opened.

Good luck

I't is better on fuel with the cap:eek: I travel back and forth from SC to Ontario once a month and always keep an eye on the fuel consumption. I installed the cap at around 30,000 km and have been getting 80km more per tank! I'm the only driver and lock the cruise at 80mph the most of the trip home.

Love the extra dry storage space:D

Price here in Montana at the Dealer is ~$2,500 installed. At the authorized dealer (Blue Ribbon Auto Body) the price with matching paint (they do it), sliding front window, rear light and installation is just a little bit over $1,900.

Not much of a decision is it? :D

Though I bought my Ridgeline in late November, I won't be taking delivery on it until December 26. It is already paid for. Based on posts in this thread, I ordered the Leer for it yesterday. It should arrive at the installer a week before I take delivery. Their price was $1899.99. With the coupon from Leer and talking to the owner, I got them to knock off $170. :D

Nice looking! I just got my 07, and want to put a cap on my rig too. Several questions:

1) Does Leer make a cap that will work with the Honda roof rack?
2) Do you know how much "over lap" from the cap over the roof line? ( I am a Ham radio freek and the only place I can find to dirll into the roof is across the back of the cab). --- ANY HAMS out there with better ideas? I need to mount 47Mhz Red Cross, combo scanner/GPS, amplified Cell, combo 2/70cm ham antennas.

With the airbag side curtains -hopefully never used - I've lost access to the A, B and C pillers. All coax must go thru the back.

Thanks!

Leer makes 2 separate caps for the Ridgeline. One if you have a roof rack, one if you don't. Slight differences at the roofline. I got the one for use with the roofrack. It looks great. I would suggest to anyone to order this model. It would look good with or without the roof rack, and it gives you the option down the road to add the rack without interference.

If I'm not mistaken and if I understand your question, the Honda Roof Rack would not be an issue with a topper of any type as it does not extend into the bed area.

I'm looking at the Raider Nomad II cap as an alternative due to a cheaper price. I'm just trying to find someone who has put one on to see what they think.

Edit: added two sentences.

So, once you have the Leer on your truck, how do you get it off conveniently? I just had mine installed today.

Answer: I discovered www.topcaplift.com. This guy is a one garage operation. Once I get a quote back from him on price, I will post it here. Meanwhile, he has pictures of how this works with one person and a crank, pulling the topper up to the rafters of your garage.

He wants $249 for the lift, but says he has never had a request for one on the Ridgeline. He understands that the Leer has a sloped rail and is not sure how that will work with his system. As I understand his design, I don't think it should be a problem.

Is there any reason the Yakima Landing Pads can't be bolted through the cap with some reenforcing underneath? I might lose adjustment flexibility but I'd also save about $160 for their outrageously priced tracks. I already own the pads and towers. Could the bars then be used as handles to hoist the cap to the rafters for removal? I'm sure it would need to be supported by a sling afterwards.
