2017 RTL with 99k miles
Twice this weekend I had the CEL come on and engine intermittently lost power.
Pulled code P0369 which is intermittent camshaft sensor signal.
Searched on here and only found this:
"TECH LINE SUMMARY ARTICLE - WE'RE GETTING REPORTS OF REDUCED ENGINE POWER WITH THE MIL ON. SERVICE TECHS ARE SEEING DTC P0369 (CMP SENSOR CIRCUIT INTERMITTENT INTERRUPTION) AND SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE CAMSHAFT END PLAY. FROM OUR INVESTIGATION, WE'VE FOUND THAT THE CAMSHAFT THRUST COVER SURFACE ROUGHNESS IS OUT OF SPEC. TO REDUCE END PLAY, SOME TECHS ARE REPLACING THE CAMSHAFT THRUST COVER. BUT EVENTUALLY, THE CAMSHAFT WILL JUST MACHINE THE THRUST COVER AGAIN, RESULTING IN FURTHER EXCESSIVE END PLAY."
Dropped at the dealer this morning and their diagnosis matches the above...replace cam, sensor, cover, various seals & gaskets. It is only on one side, not sure which. Plus I'd have them do the timing belt & water pump.
Estimate is $3300 for the cam and associated work; another $1000 (reduced from 1400) for the timing belt job.
I came >< this close to trading in this truck a couple weeks ago since a similar 2022 RTL was available, and used car prices are out of sight right now. Instead I'm looking at a huge bill to get it fixed. In general I buy Honda because I expect not to have these kinds of problems...sensor going bad is expected at 100k, but not a structural issue. Cost of OEM parts like a camshaft are far from actual cost.
Anyone else had P0369 and a similar diagnosis? What was the scope & cost of repair? I also see a number of engines at LKQ and such for under $2k with under 40k miles; figure that will be about the same cost after shipping & install.
