I found a cup holder insert that fits well in the Ridgeline. It is an insert that is used in the rear armrest of the Cadillac ATS. The GM part number is 22902594. I paid $13.25 plus tax at a Cadillac dealer.

The center web is deeper than the Ridgeline, so I cut it with a razor blade to 1" below the bottom of the insert. I also cut the two halves apart because the Cadillac cup holders are slightly closer together than the Ridgeline. I plan to put a compressible wedge in the space between the cup holders that will be 1" thick, 1" deep, and 1 1/4" wide to hold the wings firmly in place which will in turn hold the cup holder inserts firmly in their respective holders.

Even without the wedge in the middle, they worked well holding a McDonald's large coffee and large sweet tea for my wife staying in place when the cups were removed for consumption.

NJames,
Great post and thanks for the photos. I am 50/50 on my MacGyver fix. I may be giving yours a whirl. Cost to try seem low. Boggles the mind to see how BADLY honda missed this in their design phase.

Yeah, I noticed them in the Dodge Journey rental I had a couple weeks back. Those lighted areas near the top are very nice indeed. Way better than Honda for sure. Fault Chrysler for a lot of things but they got some good in them with the radio and the lighted cup holders ! And that new Dodge Demon is gonna have 1000hp lol geeze what's next ? 2000hp ?

Have you seen Fate of the Furious, yet? The car in the scene in/around the 5:30 mark of this video is an old GTX that Dom's driving. At one point, they ask, "what's he got in that thing, 1000HP?" "More like 2000!"

Sorry, your comment reminded me of that line!

The RTL-E I test drove had perimeter-illuminated cupholders.
Kind of funny if you think about it. Honda, on its top line Ridgeline RTL-B, wastes engineering time tasking engineers to light a poorly designed interior feature (2 cup holders) to help point out a design flaw. Bring back the 'old fashioned' twin cup holders that popped out of the dashboard [like a CD tray on a computer] that were only seen when you wanted to use them and free up space taken by two close to useless holes in the console for something more useful like a knob to control infotainment systems.

Ok, so I like the lighted accents in the RTL-E cab and wouldn't call it an engineering failure?! I've also found that my travel mug (which is an odd size, with a handle, that I thought would never fit) actually does fit in the cup holders. I found a 12oz beverage can, and the various water bottles I've put in them also fit - even while driving!

So,basically a non issue for me...

I find the lighted cup holder surrounds kinda fun (wish my T offered the feature ) but I remain disappointed that the cup holder(s) were designed with an nonadjustable one size fits all design. Cups, bottles or mugs rattling around in a one size fits all cup holder while driving any vehicle (especially at this price point) is hard to defend. By the way, the cup holder(s) in the rear center arm rest will never be mistaken for something attractive. I think that Honda borrowed their design from a 1970s Russian Lada. Nothing says class more than a molded flat piece of plastic .
I never use my cup holders anyway (my wife and grand kids do) but I do occasionally like to complain about cost cutting attempts as visible as our nonadjustable cup holders.
Joe, you lucked out with your choice of travel mug but 12 oz. cans still flop around in the holders . Matters little, enjoy your truck .

Cans of soda when full can splash and make a sticky mess in the cup holders. Or a coffee cup when full can splash through the drinking opening. Spilling is therefore a matter of severity. The mess will likely be contained to the inside of the cavity defined as a cup holder.

I'm curious - do cans/bottles flop around to the point of spilling (or risk spilling) or is it just a rattling issue?

And skinny bottles like this (page 2) are uncontrollable.

These seem fine to me (the skinniest bottles I could find). The rearward bottle remained upright all day, the front bottle would lean-over every now and then, but certainly not a problem. This size bottle also fits in the forward door cubby, and opening/closing the door didn't dislodge it (as long as it had water in it).
