Three-Row SUV Comparison: Honda Pilot Comes In Last

The new Pilot is having transmission issues, and water leaks. I was hoping the new 10-speed transmission from Honda would be the end of transmission issues, but apparently not. Some are failing right out of the gate. :(

These reviews are really subjective as other sources have downgraded the CX-90 for a couple of shortcomings.

I see plenty of Generation 1 Pilot's still running around. Plenty of Gen 2 Pilot boxes all around. KIA and Hyundai came out with a lot of vehicles with fresh styling.
Then that style fades and you don't see many on the road or streets. When you do see one it looks odd in style.
However that old Honda and Acura with its less flashy looks at age still looks good.
I will agree with you, the Koreans do change their vehicles much more than Honda or Toyota. It is in their culture. They do borrow designs from other manufacturers and meld them together. To me the new Pilot looks like a Dodge Durango from the side with the smallish piece of glass in the cargo area. The new 2024 Santa Fe looks pretty nice and reminds me of the older boxy Pilot with some flare to it. It will be introduced to the US on Thursday. The Korean twins do catch the eye, but I am not sure what is underneath is built to last.

C'mon here, the biggest negative being posted is that the styling is boring ?! To you maybe, eh ? Perhaps the styling to others, is wonderful. Maybe ? Bear in mind, the 'styling' to which most of us speak, is a bunch of chitzy plastic crap which actually means nothing with regards to the vehicle quality, durability, longevity, nor resale value. I would call it 'superficial'. In comparison to Honda Pilots that being old old ones still on the road- I simply do not see any Hyundais nor Kias and those I do, look like rolling junk heaps. Why is that ? Draw your own conclusions. I am simply offering a counter-point to this discussion which is mostly 'styling based' , A Pilot is twice the vehicle those others are in the long term. The actual metrics will weigh that out. But by all means do your own research.
After perusing the Piloteers and Pilot FB forums it seems the 2023-2024 Pilot is having some/more than some growing pains.

I have a Pilot and am on the Pilot forum. I'm not aware of "more than some growing pains." I don't see it on the subforum you're referencing.

Are you getting this from a Facebook group? Of course there are a few disgruntled owners, as there always are. Even Ridgelines.

Otherwise, I have yet to see anything statistically significant regarding current Pilot issues. The Pilot continues to sell briskly (2-3 times the rate of the Ridgeline), and probably would sell a lot more if the supply were there.
I certainly don’t have an axe to grind regarding the Pilot, as I do like it. Glad you are enjoying yours. I don’t think the issues are widespread on every Pilot, just a variety of things that are cropping up. One lady on FB had a cable break underneath the vehicle and it was dragging on the ground. Poor fit and finish seem to be the most prevalent. Transmission issues are disabling vehicles for weeks. Hopefully, Honda gets it all sorted out.

Hmm, not sure what to say there except maybe you- and they- should be buying the 'better' Hyundais and Kias....!? I am not sure if FB rants constitute a significant quality issue. My experience is with the '20 RL not Pilot although there are a lot of shared components- none of these issues in the RL from '20.
No one said the Kia/Hyundai vehicles were better, only that the new Pilot has a few nagging minor issues that irritate the owners.

Does this sound normal on a 2024 Honda Pilot? The owner says the noise goes away somewhat after it warms up.

Hi Ashley,

Since you’re looking for three rows, that rules out the Toyota FourRunner. Toyota’s comparable offering to the Pilot would be the Highlander. Better yet their Grand Highlander offers extra space and a nice hybrid drive system.

But you also mention muddy roads and farm use. For a vehicle that is going to see a lot of rough conditions, I would be looking at the Chevy Tahoe/Suburban. These models are offered with a very impressive and fuel efficient turbodiesel engine, which would be my choice.

Best of luck and fire away with any additional questions.
A couple of versions of the new 4Runner have 3 rows, but it will be a cramped space.
