Bone dry? Hmm. Pickup won’t move if the level is _too_ low. I thought I recollected being able to see at least a tiny bit of fluid on the stick at the point where drive power was unreliable in my pickup. Perhaps I recall incorrectly.

Anyway, I agree that someone probably forgot to put the dipstick all the way down. Keep an eye on it. You can also check the vent hose to make sure the tranny is properly vented.
