I have a 2017 Ridgeline and had the same All wheel drive system problem error. It would occur hot or cold, as soon as as I put it in gear and started moving. There were no other problems and the truck ran completely normal otherwise. It took me 5 months to finally find an opportunity to get the truck to a dealer to check it out, partly because of forums like this one with such mixed comments and poor dealer confidence in these posts, Anyway, I took it in and left it in their care. By the end of the day I got a call telling me that they were going to replace the entire differential, on warranty, at no cost to me. There was a known issue with a “motor” inside the differential (probably the oil pump) and rather than try to repair it, they chose to replace The entire diff with a new one. Hats off to Norm Reeves Honda in Costa Mesa for not messing around.

I get the truck back tomorrow (7/8/20). If there are any further problems I’ll be sure to update this post.

The rear differential is covered under Honda's 5/60 powertrain limited warranty. The decision to replace the differential was Honda's - not the dealer's. I assure you the dealer did not absorb a penny of this repair or have any influence in the outcome. Just giving credit where credit is due.

Question regarding All Wheel Drive System Problem. My early 2017 Ridgeline has 48,000 miles and runs great. Recently it has had a repeat transient appearance of 2 faults. The All Wheel Drive System Problem and the Emissions Control Problem. They appear at start up and after driving for about 20 miles and shutting off engine, on restart the All Wherl Drive System Problem is always gone, but the Emissions Control Problem will persist for the day or up to 3 days before disappearing. I took it to my Honda dealer today and at Honda's expense they are replacing the high pressure fuel pump, fuel rails and fuel injectors. I asked about the All Wheel Drive System Problem and mechanic said there are no codes for it and he believes it will disappear after the fuel system is fixed. Does the differential oil pump failure flash a code or is it diagnosed via process of elimination?

That's normal. The PCM will disable the AWD system for certain engine-related faults. For some faults, it's not unusual to see a half-dozen or more error message for seemingly unrelated issues.

Okay mechanical people I need your help/advice. And no I did not read all the posts here so maybe the answer has already been touched on. So I picked up my 17 Ridgeline after work. I had the spark plugs and valve adjustment done today. As soon as I start it up the awd light with system error and emissions error with engine light come on. Tech comes out said he forgot to plug in the O2 sensor. Plugs it in, but had to clear the codes 3 times before they wouldn’t pop up anymore. Drove it home 10 minutes and nothing. Should I be concerned with any issues? I can understand the O2 sensor causing the light and emissions but the AWD system doesn’t make sense to me and I’ve never had that issue til now. Thanks for any help on this!

The driveability cycle will take a few days to complete and put it into IM READY mode. Drive it normally and see how it goes.

I will say, I love my truck but all these requirements for the 100k service minder are killing my checkbook. Water pump, timing belt, radiator flush, spark plugs, valve adjustment done, still have all the fluid flushes to go! 😔

Yep, but the thought is that it's still cheaper than a new vehicle (maybe not right now with so high used car values).

Obviously the dealership didn’t want to do it, so pawn it off to the unsuspecting buyer. Bought as is no warranty. But once I get thru all this service I should be good for awhile. At least I hope!!

well....that's kind of scary since I just traded in a Subaru after I did all the water pump, timing belt, fluid changes at 100K and NOW I find out I might have to do it to my Ridgeline....that sucks....whatever happened to a timing chain that lasted forever etc....PLUS my AWD problem light came on at 7200 miles...love the truck but not liking some of the stuff now and down the road that will cost thousands to fix

I took it to the dealership and they told me I have corrosion on the pump, and it needs to be replaced along with a harness. I anyone else finding an issue with this? I have very low miles on the vehicle. They said it is causing a communication issue. Very expensive to replace. Can they corrosion be cleaned?

Here are the codes the dealership gave me: C1850-12 And C1851-87 / replace differential pump and Harness is the fix.

There was a connector/wiring corrosion issue on early 2017 Ridgelines due to a wiring harness that was made out of specification by a supplier, but yours is the first report of its kind I've seen on here - definitely a very isolated issue at worst.

It depends on the amount of corrosion damage. Sometimes corrosion will result in high contact resistance causing the connector to overheat. Many PCM faults will disable AWD and turn on the AWD fault light. Are there any other faults, besides AWD, being reported?

Yes, the emissions light has been flagging off and on. It was off when I visited the dealership the other day. I think it was P0175

I would get the P0175 DTC resolved before working on the AWD issue. Could be unrelated but many PCM DTCs will disable AWD.
