OBD for transmission temperature

My apologies if this is in the wrong forum. If so, I appreciate feedback on where better to post my question.
I recently borrowed my son's OBDLink LX OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner for Android and Windows and put it to work on my 2019 Ridgeline. Used the free software from OBDLink LX and it worked fine. However, I could not find a sensor reading for transmission temperature, which is the only reason I was considering buying the OBD unit in the first place.
1) Does my 2019 Ridgeline have a sensor for transmission temperature? I assume it does since I have read about folks getting a high transmission temp light.
2) Is there a real-time OBD unit and software combo that I can buy to let me monitor transmission temperature while pulling my trailer.
Thanks for your help!

Try here:

I have had better luck using a ScanGauge II.

You can monitor ATF temp using a bluetooth dongle* ($15 now) and an app for your phone (I use 'Car Scanner' which was $4 for the full version).

You can set up a custom display to show whatever data you like and record it. Screenshot of one of my displays (with simulated data values):

* This dongle works only with Android, so if you have an iPhone, you need a different option (or buy a cheap Android).

I 2nd this solution. I just set this up for my '22 RTL-E yesterday. I tried out Car Scanner, Torque, and Obd Mary.

The only downside to Car Scanner is that the dashboard is infinitely customizable but you have to do it. It's not as pretty "out of the box" as Torque, but it was much less headache to work with my cheap dongle and it works consistently, and it's possible to customize the dashboards very well with a little effort.

FYI the Transmission Fluid Temp is listed as "ATF temperature var.2". Both var.1 and var.3 exist and report zero values, this one seems to report the correct value.

Now to mount the phone somewhere good...

If your app and dongle support custom pics, then yes.

No one has figured out how to do this on a G1 have they?

On a related note:

1) I couldn't find Engine Oil Temp anywhere. Does anyone disagree that this value is not available on the Gen 2 Ridgeline?

2) Does anyone have some technically-defensible ranges for normal operating and red line? (I.e. something beyond "I've been using this since I pulled wagons with mules and it's always worked for me!") I've seen lots of info around "normal should be 200ish" but the recommended temp varies quite a bit. I know ATF lifetime is highly temp sensitive, but are there limits on the transmission itself as well?

(I haven't taken a drive around to see what the normal range is, yet.)

I haven’t seen oil temp or oil pressure as being displayable on the ScanGauge II…..don’t think Honda makes either reportable on the G2 Rigi. So-called “normal temp” has a lot to do if there is a thermostat used to regulate a specific fluid temp or not along with with driving conditions. To me, transmission “limits” has a lot to do with the Honda towed weights/speed limits when towing. I realize some have had a tranny failure and never towed. Wonder if there is a auto manufacturer that has never had a tranny failure.

200ish TFT has always raised at least one of my eyebrows.

I'm not authorized to advertise, so I'll just say that I purchased a ScanGauge II for myself from AutoZone.com where I also found a 20% off coupon and free shipping. It appears this offer is good until at least April, 9, 2022. I believe this is the best price currently available anywhere.

Correct. There's no oil temperature or pressure sensor on the Ridgeline. Oil temperature is calculated using data from other sensors for the purpose of calculating engine oil life. Oil pressure is detected using a switch that that's either on (normal oil pressure) or off (low/no oil pressure).

I had my useless BlueDriver ODB2 Scanner with me the day my transmission overheated after much slipping in a seriously inclined dirt road. Normally it would had worked, but claimed it needed an update and didn't show ATF temp.

I cannot recommend it anymore it let me down the day I needed it the most.

Does the ScanGuage II record data (for later download) as well as display it?

If it can be set up to automatically records temps over several weeks for later download and analysis, I think I might just take advantage of the 20% discount. If it does this, you could just download the data every few weeks to see if high temps were reached and use that as a trigger to change the ATF.

I just take a quick glance ever so often and make a mental note.🤷‍♂️ The only temp that I've noticed making a really big +/- swing quickly is CT2 and that's only with a big swing in driving speed for a few miles. CT1 and CT2 can easily be 100* apart from each other....depending on driving conditions.

The Lance is about 3000lb dry, maybe 3800-4200 a ready for a trip. Fair amount of windage. Electric brakes and a weight distributing hitch, tows great.
Cutoff for trans temp is around 85F ambient. Below that it runs at 195-205, stable. Above 85 it will creep, we slowed if it got near 220.

160 highway driving without trailer.
