2006 Honda ridgeline - engine replacement options

Hi all,

I am encountering an oil burning issue in my 2006 Honda ridgeline. It is burning 1 quart oil every 100miles. I have consulted with two technicians and both of them recommend to replace engine.
I have decided to go with a remanufactured engine. Do you have any recommendations on who sells credible remanufactured engines?
I found few from internet, but don’t know how good they are.

Found out the hard that my '08 extremely overheated some point before I bought it. It blew the coolant crossover pipe. It showed other signs of critical overheating. Because I want a reliable truck and want to keep it a long time I splurged on a Jasper remanufactured engine. They are not cheap, around $5K, but they come with a three year 100K mile warranty. The are recommended by Scotty Kilmer of Youtube fame.

Scotty is probably one of the least reliable sources you could cite. He is a prototypical bufoon!

A bit of info about Jasper engines. We stuck one in my son's '01 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The installer re-used the timing chain and a few other parts. These had to be replaced about 10K miles after the new engine was installed. So far no problems. Also the warranty is VERY specific about maintenance! Follow it to the letter or there is no coverage.
Make sure you replace all parts on the new motor with new parts (belts, seals etc.) or you'll be tearing into it for repairs. However his motor has held up with no issues once we got the used parts replaced. YMMV

Scotty Kilmer is funny in the fact that he is so obsessed with making content, that he contradicts himself because he likely can't keep track of everything he says.

He has two videos, as an example, where in one, he says that the Lexus LS430 is one of the best vehicles that money can buy, and then in another video, he does nothing but rag on the same exact car, and says it's on his do not buy list... I even commented on both of them with links to one another to see if he would respond.

What about local machine shops? I have seen questionable quality come from Jasper engines, and although some of them may be great, there sometimes are "musical engine" warranty issues that require numerous change outs to get one that was done right.

I am not sure if the 2006s oil burning problems can be corrected, but a local reputable engine shop might be able to help as well.

I was told by 3 shops my number 4 cylinder was toast and needed a new motor. Took it to Honda for them to do the work and the service manager asked if he could try some more diagnostics before testing the motor out.

J series motors are notorious for carbon build up on the piston rings. They used BG EPR in excess, even putting the #4 cyl at BDC and letting it soak.

Long story short they saved me $10,000. It cleaned up the carbon and I got all compression back. Might give that a shot before replacing the motor.

The quote to do an engine swap(including engine price(81k used engine with 1 year warranty), other parts, labor and tax) is coming closer to $7500. I am going to give a final try with BG EPR. Final update
After devastating engine flush experience, I have made up my mind to go with a used engine swap. I got a used engine(2008 model from eBay with 81k miles on it) for $1651(inc tax)

Engine swap was complete for another $4900.( Inc new radiator installed)

So total engine swap expense - $6590
Truck works like a charm so far. No more oil burning issue. Thanks a lot everyone here for your invaluable inputs. 🙏🏻

i got a jdm motor for a honda civic for about 350$ at the time and it was well worth it . They say jdms are same engines but the difference was huge. that civic hauled ass after engine swap. if you are capable of doing your own swap, jdm's are a good way to go in my opinion I went with a local place and was very happy with results. for reference on anyone looking for info on swapping engines. jdm with 60k are about 800 not including freight or shipping for 2023
