2024 Ridgeline Sport, A Review

Hey all!

I had a 2021 Ridgeline Sport, but I ended up upgrading to a 2024 Ridgeline Sport, this week. My 2 reasons for doing so, were I was able to finance at a lower APR than my previous Ridgeline, and also my previous Ridgeline was black, and when I bought it I did not realize how incredibly hot it could get in the Summer. I always wanted a red one, so that was part of my reason for change...

The performance and feel of the truck while driving is identical, and the 5 seats and doors are identical as well, so no changes there. Now for the changes:

THE GOOD:

I love the new infotainment screen. It looks better, it's faster, the controls are smoother. And the upgrade in size is noticeable and nice. I think they struck the perfect balance, the middle screen in the Tundra is too big in my opinion. The new middle console is a big improvement. I was one of the rare people who actually enjoyed the rolling slide door they had before, but the new center console is nicer and bigger, and it fit my right elbow well (I'm 6ft tall). I thought I would miss the little chair arms, but the overall feel is the same. Also, it sounds like they upgraded the speakers? I was listening to some music and it sounded really good, but that could be my imagination.

The previous sport did not have a lot of features that have now become standard.... So the 2024 has:

  • the phone charging pad
  • the blind spot warning system
  • the backup sensors for approaching vehicles while you are in reverse.
  • The steering wheel is also the nice leather one

So again, all of these features are now included, and previously they were not a part of the Sport model. I'm so glad Honda added them, they are all great. Also, this model has the Honda Link through bluetooth, so now when I get into the car I don't even have to connect the wire to my phone. My maps, pandora, etc all plays through the infotainment system without having to be plugged in. So when you get into the car you can leave your key and phone in your pocket. So convenient :)

I should also warn people. With the phone charging pad, don't put your credit cards on it. I have recently learned that if you have a phone case like I do (with the credit cards on it) and you set it on the charging pad, it can fry the chip in the card. Now I'm wondering if there is a way to turn off the charging pad??

I had the dealer add the HPD flares to my vehicle. On the previous edition many people thought the flares looked terrible, but on this model they reduced the size of them a lot, and slimmed down their thickness, I think they look great.

Some complained about the vehicle name being stamped on the tailgate, but I think it looks great. better to me than just the big flat surface.

THE BAD:

Like many I was hoping they would use a different transmission, but they kept the same one. I don't think it's a huge issue, but like many have noticed, once in a while (especially in cold weather) you'll notice a shift that isn't exactly perfect, just a little bit jumpy.

I also don't like the new instrument cluster. The previous cluster was really clear and well layed out. The new one isn't very bright, the text is small, and the overall layout isn't easy to see things quickly. The previous cluster was much better.

On the steering wheel they went with some smaller buttons, especially on the up and down for the cruise control speed. It's more difficult to hit these buttons and get the cruise control started. Also I can't seem to find the button that hangs up the phone during a call. Am I missing something?

I think this might be a user error issue, but when the phone is connected via bluetooth and honda link, when someone calls me I can't get the audio to go through the car speakers, any ideas?

I also wish they had made the halo daytime running lights on the front of the vehicle standard for the sport, but no luck. So this Sport model doesn't have the cool halo look that the RTL-E and BE had on the front headlights

Last, I didn't really like the looks of the front grille, but I don't consider this a big issue. I'll swap it for the grille from the Trailport soon, that one I love.

Feedback welcome. 😄

there is a power button next to the pads status LED.

if you have a phone case like I do (with the credit cards on it)
this is what the wife has, and she constantly uses nothing but conductive wireless charging; with a host of aftermarket chargers (it's not an Apple phone; thus it is universal to this method of charging. Never a CC issue.)

I have a 23 BE. I sat in a new 24 to see how I like the changes. I really wanted cooled seats and folding mirrors. The new arm rests feel ok but not as useful as the 23 With the sliding storage box. Don’t like the new steering wheel and the instrument cluster, I prefer the large temp gauge and fuel gauge gauge. Would never look at the large analog speedometer when I have digital. Don’t like the Ridiculous stamped tailgate. The final deal breaker was no in bed sleakers!

Even though I want the cooled seats and power folding mirrors I not willing to take the hit on trading to get a truck I don’t like as well as the one I have.

Great writeup, and the '24 Sport sounds like a winner. Totally agreed that the wheel flare / protectors look nice and compliment the look. Congrats on a really sweet lookin' ride!

Side-note, there are gobs of transmission posts, and overall the 9 speed has proven to be really solid overall versus the 6 speed that had a fairly high percentage of folks having issues when hitting higher mileage. Of course we might see the 9 speed start having more failures as time passes (hope not!).

Great post. Thanks. I also have a 2021 Sport that I love. It's black on black and I've been lusting for a gray or silver sport and would also upgrade to a 2024 just to get the blind spot warning. I think your decision to upgrade was spot on. I also hate the Honda standard fender flares and also think the HPDs are over the top. But I've got to be honest, those fender flares look like they belong on a donkey cart. I guess Honda was trying to follow the lines of the fender? When I first saw those flares, I thought they were from a discount Pep Boys after-market discontinued warehouse special, all sales final. LOL. Forgive me but I couldn't resist. I love Honda. I love your Ridgeline. I fully understand why you added the flares. But sometimes Honda does the most boneheaded things imaginable. Honda needs to have a worldwide meeting of their best engineers and stylists to come up with a fender flare that doesn't suck. So far, they have totally failed. Hope you are laughing....

Hi so as I was reading your review, On the cons I noticed that you have a gear that shifts hard or bumpy when in cold temperatures and I noticed that my 2024 Black edition that I purchased a few weeks ago shifts rough as well. From what I read the Ridgeline starts in 2nd gear so I counted the gears as its shifting and mine shifts hard from 4 to 5, around 30-40mph. Also watching another youtube video about the ZF9 Transmissions, They mentioned that this transmission has two dog clutches and I'm assuming that is what we're feeling when it shifts. Once it's warmed up I no longer feel the rough shifts. When I bring it in for it's first service I will ask to see if they can reflash the transmission.

I must weigh in on the 9 speed ZF tranny which is what I have in my '20 RL. Fantastic upgrade over the 6 speed. I see no need for more gears, as I tow a LOT, I am always able to select an appropriate gear, not sure what 1 more gear would buy me. The ZF seems to be a proven platform across multiple product lines. So is reliability the issue ? I have an 'S' mode' which is a deal maker for me as far as towing is concerned....

I researched thoroughly and test drove 2024 against 2023 multiple times, at multiple dealers before choosing 24 BE over 23 RTL-E. Nothing in my research or my 15k miles in the 24 BE suggests that the 9-speed is not a totally solid tranny.

I liked the 24 driver's instrument panel much, much better than 2023. The brighter easier [for me] display was a big selling point. It is interesting that you preferred 2023.

I love the 2024 BE truck but hate the lack of front middle parking sensor that my other vehicles have had for more than 20 years. The corner sensors are actually misleading because they logically make your brain think that there is also a middle sensor [which competent design would have included]. Every day I need to constantly override logic and tell myself that no, there is no sensor in the middle where one has always been on every other vehicle of mine.
