Apple CarPlay switching automatically to dark mode

I'm having trouble with Apple Maps on CarPlay in my '24 BE. The screen won't automatically switch to dark mode like it has in my previous vehicles and in my other car. When it gets dark outside, the map is supposed to switch to a dark version, but my map stays white. The only way I can change it to dark mode is by going into settings and switching it manually. Is anyone else experiencing this?

In order, I would:
1 Perform a force restart on the iPhone
2 Toggle the Appearance setting in Settings on the CarPlay app on the RL.
3 Remove the iPhone from the RL's CarPlay list, and "Forget This Car" on the iPhone.
Ensure the iPhone is up to date, and do a forced restart, then start over with CarPlay.

Probably not the phone... Actually, there are a couple of things.

The CarPlay Day/Night settings are adjusted by the car's system when it decides to go to Day/Night for the display.
  • The Auto-adjustments happen when the headlights are in auto and the light sensor senses the need for the change.
  • There are sensitivity adjustments under the lighting settings in the vehicle's settings (below screenshots)
  • Also
    • Have the headlights in Auto (rotate on all the way and then twist back one click).
    • And the dash dimming control at least one notch below full (not full).

I’m going to have to look at the brightness settings tonight. It could be the only logical answer unless it’s Ridgeline software related

It’s strange how different navigation apps handle dark mode. Google Maps switches to dark mode automatically at sunset. Waze only does so when I select “only at night.” If I choose “same as iPhone settings” in Waze, the map stays white. Meanwhile, Apple Maps remains white unless I set it to “always dark.” What’s odd is that Apple Maps on my iPhone switched dark mode automatically, but the CarPlay, map stays white. Crazy that the iPhone shows a dark map but CarPlay shows a white map at the same time. I’m at a loss.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse but is anyone else experiencing this issue? My wife drives a 2023 Palisade and there are no issues with the map switching from light to dark mode as soon as it starts getting dark. The Ridgeline stays bright white on the map unless I change it manually. First world problems I guess

Anyone totally figure this out? I'm getting SOOOO frustrated. I'm quite tech savy but this one has got me good.....
I'm having the same issue with my '25 BE I just purchased last month. I'm getting quite frustrated with my attempts to get this working properly - I never had an issue on my '17 RTLE
  1. I've tried the radio display brightness options in the radio - no help
  2. I've tried the brightness options for the dashboard that also lowers the brightness of the radio at the same time - also no help
  3. I've tried via the built in wireless CarPlay (my usual way to use) AND I tried apple wired directly to my phone - no help.
  4. I've tried with the truck's lights in AUTO mode and then also in parking lights and headlights ON moved - doesn't help.
  5. When I"m expecting Apple Maps to be dark on the truck's radio screen, the truck maps display is in "day" mode but my phone's map display IS in dark mode
  6. While Apple Maps shows day mode, Waze and Google Maps correctly DO switch to dark mode on the truck radio display. I can get a video showing this oddity.
  7. With the other apps working I thought may be it was an apple maps setting but I tried it in my Ford Edge and my daughter's Mazda CX5 and dark apple maps on the vehicle displays works fine.
I'm not sure what to check next. Anyone else have ideas?

I am having the same problem with Apple maps not auto diming on my 2024 Ridgeline. 9 months trying to resolve this problem. I now believe it is an Apply Play software issue. Auto dim works fine when using Google and Waze maps. My wife's iPhone 14 has the exact same problem in the Ridgeline. My wife has a 2025 Pilot and apple maps auto dim works fine with both of our phones. I have double checked all the setting, Pilot and Ridgeline are set the same. Auto diming is set in both vehicles. Very annoying problem at night.

Try an experiment: Adjust Location Services
iPhone's Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services -- System Customization = Enable... and Setting Time Zone = Enable.

If it bothers you that much and it just wont work and you just want Dark Mode, maybe you can change to ALWAYS DARK on your displayed-CARPLAY screen.
Settings > Appearance > "Always Dark"
