Bad wipers / bad windshield

This is a strange one. Bought a 2008 Ridgeline with 46K this summer. Brought in for oil change 2 months later and had them change streaking wipers.

3-5 weeks later noticed a marking like a smudge in an arc (from the wiper) on the drivers side. Checked the wipers and nothing stuck in the blade and there was no metal or plastic from the wiper arm rubbing on the glass. This could not be cleaned off, but it wasn't a physical scratch...it was a "marring" or wearing of the glass

Complained to the service manager that we did not have a problem until new wipers were put on...made no sense to me but that was what happened. To my surprise they replaced the windshield and wipers at no charge...wow...I was happy

Now 3 months later and only after a huge rainstorm yesterday, I have the same problem, in almost the same location and it won't clean off. I am starting to relate this to when the wipers are on high...but it still desn't make any sense

Again I checked the blades for any debris etc. I have been driving cars and trucks for 40 years and never had this problem before

Has anyone had a similar issue ?

Do you have a marker of some type in your garage that you use (That touches the windshield) so that you do not drive into the garage wall?

Doesn't add up that wipers could do physical damage to the windshield. Can you feel it with your fingernail? Is the windshield coating wore off in that spot?

To have the same thing happen twice sure is wierd. Keep us posted on this and welcome to the ROC! This is definately the right place to ask..

When they replaced the wipers, did they just replace the inserts? The reason I ask is that the arm that the wiper attaches to could be malformed and applying too much pressure at the point where you are getting the mark. It could even be allowing the metal portion of the wiper to drag slightly, especially on high setting.

Just a thought...

most likely metal is rubbing on the the glass, if it does not feel like a scratch, use a credit card or a utility blade to clean it, some alcohol may help.

I think you may be on to something....they said they replaced the wipers but it was probably just the rubber blades. After a while rubbing with alchohol cleaned it up.

I previously checked to make sure the metal portion wasn't impacting the glass using slight downward pressure, but now I think I know what is happening.

When it is raining and the wipers are on high, the added pressure from the force of the wind coupled with the force of the driving rain is compressing the distance between the metal portion of the blade and the glass resulting in the scratching. Faster I am going the more the compression

I am going to replace the entire rubber and metal portion of the blade this w/e.

thanks for your help

Why not get a set of those chrome plastic blades which have two blades on each arm?

I'm kidding! Sounds like you may have found your answer. Good luck

I bought some replacement Michelin wiper blades - they do an excellent job, however they did leave a black mark on the glass until the rubber wore in.

I have had a smearing issue in the same spot since 2008. Its fine with new wipers for about 2 months then it starts to smear on the middle of the drivers side. I finally found a set of blades that dont do it(trico teflon shield). I decided that my windshield must be shaped wrong, its not inpossible. How else could you explain countless diff brands of wiper blades all doing the same thing? Oh and yes, I did have the wiper arms and springs replaced and it contunued.

Windscreen wipers are weird.
Have had Honda vehicles since 1983.
Have found a Canadian winter followed by a scorching
hot southern Ontario summer plays havoc with any
windshield wiper blades.
I have replaced blades in September every year.
And I replace the blade and the wiper itself; never just the rubber blades.
Honda for used used Bosch here in Canada; perhaps under license from another company. Have tried alternate blades and have always returned to Bosch.

My 1984 Honda Accord when it died with nearly 400,000 kilometres on the
clock had a radial scratch in the front windshield, from a damaged blade holder. It wasn't something that could be buffed out.

So have as noted replaced both the wipe blade and the holder every
September. Expensive yes however in a blinding snow storm those wiper blades work very hard!

I also have that same problem, I use Goodyear Assurance wipers and Still have the problem ONLY on the drivers side, I think it may be a design flaw in the wiper arm.
Joe if your reading this what do you think?
