Oil Life Mode

I have an 08 Ridgeline and changed my oil the first time at 5,000 miles which coincided with the oil life percentage setting on the dash readout. Does anyone know how this feature works and should I be changing the oil/filter as indicated on this readout? Any help would be appreciated.

Mine was actually around 7500 when mine first came on. But i only followed it for the first change. There are supposedly additives in the new oil that you should leave in for breaking. So thats why i left it till the truck told me. Now i just change it every 3750.

Here is a little explination i found on Yahoo answers.

the maintenance minder uses the same information that the programmed fuel injection system uses in its calculations for the fuel injection to determine how the vehicle is being used. Those calculations are used to forecast when the oil should be changed based on how hard the oil is being asked to work to lubricate the engine under the varying engine conditions.

the primary factors that affect the engine oil life are:
engine temperature
engine load
mileage driven
trip duration
vehicle speed
and
engine speed

the lower the engine speeds at the percent of time the engine is spent at lower engine speeds with light loads the longer the oil can last.
under higher speed, higher temperature and heavy engine loads (going up hills, using the air conditioning etc) the more frequently the engine oil should be changed. All of these factors are calcculated using the engine sensors for the fuel injection and then the life of the oil is forecast based on how you are using the car.

There are many many threads on this issue so you might want to do a search. Basically you have the MM school who go by the MM, and the Synthetic or 3,000 mile school that traditionally prefer to go by a specific mileage.

Personally, I'm a convert to the MM. My three oil changes tend to be between 5,000 and 5,400 miles.

I'm concerned if these two groups ever get together. I predict many, many temporary spare tires will be used as weapons.;)

Seriously, there's no right or wrong, just change your oil!
