got a weird clunk from both front wheels, not at the same time. not all the time, but 95%. feels like brakes. lugs tight, ebc rotors and yellow pads less than a year old. won't clunk (other than transmission noise) when shifting forward to reverse. wont' clunk on gentle forward and reverse. only on hard forward application to reverse. does not clunk ever when moving forward.

i think the pads are moving radially in the calipers. i changed the end shims again and they are still clunking. so now i'm thinking the calipers are worn out.

i'd like to do the pilot brake conversion, but don't want to trash the newish rotors and pads. is there a better caliper that still fits stock rotor diameter?

what do you all think?

Yes, it sounds like the pads are just shifting in the calipers after a change in direction. This is somewhat common. Your calipers may be on the large side of the size tolerance and/or your pads may be on the small size, creating a larger gap than normal. That said, you always want some movement there, or else the pads are prone to seizing with corrosion, etc.

It probably makes this noise only once after changing direction. That is, if you go into reverse and brake moderately, you'll hear the clunk. Release the brakes in reverse and brake again. You shouldn't hear the clunk again, because the pads will already be at the "top" of the caliper.

Our Ridgeline never made this noise, but our '05 MDX used to, with Akebono pads. At the last pad replacement, I used Centric pads and they don't shift in the calipers. Maybe they're just a hair larger in size than the Akebonos were.

thanks for the advice. can either caliper use the 07 pad shape? these ebc's have only been on for less than a year and they didn't make this noise new. plus i have another new set of front pads waiting when these wear out.

i thought it was the pad clips because i bought some wagner ones and they were cheap, but i tried to get OEM and they are 40 bucks each! so i bought more wagners thinking maybe the originals were junk. but no resolution.

Unfortunately the G1 does not share the same pad size with the G2 or the current gen Odyssey.
G2 shares its pad with the Pilot and the pad is longer and thicker than the G1. Width is the same.

To eliminate any other possibility, an image of the propeller shaft ends (transfer case & rear diff) would be advised. I had that clunk in reverse and it ended up being worn out joint in the rear differential.

Also, make sure you are torquing the wheels (off the ground) to 95lbs (+/- 1ftlb)
