What Oil do you put in your vehicles?

Changed the oil in my G2 tonight at 3k miles.

Used 0W-20, Amsoil Synthetic. Based on my research Amsoil produces the least amount of cylinder wear in benchmark tests and is best for engine longevity.

Also used K&N Performance Oil Filter (Based on the '16 Pilot size shown in the booklet) for maximum Oil Flow.

Running like a champ after the change from the break in Oil.

What do you guys use and why?

Per Honda's instructions, I do not perform the first oil change until the Maintenance Minder tells me to. I use "Honda" brand 0W-20 oil. I do, however, change the oil filter at every oil change instead of every other oil change as instructed.

Make sure you're using the A01 and not the A02 oil filter. (Does the G2 RL use the same filter as the G1?)

I just checked and the filter that Bernardi is sending me is the A02. I put a question into them to find out which filter is the right one. I got the part number by looking on the engine parts map, supposedly specific to the 2017 Ridgeline, but somebody could've made a mistake.

Mobil 1 in all mine all the time:

2013 CX-5
2013 Ridgeline
2006 modified Miata
1992 stock Miata

2012 Yamaha 130 Waverunner
2010 Yamaha outboards (15 and 40HP)
Glastron 350 V8 stern drive boat
2012 modified 1200 Ski Doo snowmobile
Harley Low Rider w/ extensively modified motor

edit: if I'm not mistaken, all 0-w20 oil is full synthetic, and I think 5w-20 may be as well.

Always change filter and use a premium quality one.

Never a problem and no worries. I've done a lot of research over the years and have the most confidence in Mobil 1 formulation and additive packages in all applications. Another plus is widespread availability and great competitive pricing - especially in the big jugs. Oils have come a LONG way and all the branded and OEM labeled synthetics are superior to dino oils. Fresh > not much difference. The real difference is that Synthetics maintain their design viscosity much better over time........and that is why they lubricate and protect better.

I've got about 900 miles on my G2 and according to Maintenance Minder, my oil is at 90%. So I have a long way to go before changing oil. However I am prepared for the task — something I haven't done in decades. I bought 6 gallons of Honda's 0w-20 fully synthetic, the Honda oil filter (which comes with a crush washer) and I picked up a Honda oil filter-sized wrench.

Years ago we were having an oil discussion on this forum. The subject came up that Amsoil was not API certified. I do use Amsoil, just not on my vehicles that are still under warranty. I'm not sure if the certification has changed, but were you to have an engine failure and Honda discovered that you were using an oil without an API certification, technically, they could deny your warranty claim.

I used the same Amsoil with my Honda CR-V, took it to the dealership 2 times in the 3 years I owned it and had to use the warranty once, they had no problem with me using Amsoil after i told them.

There's no way im waiting for the maintenance minder to change oil on a brand new engine, the service guy said changing it at 3k would be just fine.

If the G2 uses the same filter as the G1, the A02 is spec'd properly. However, it is a poorly constructed filter with cardboard end caps. The A01 filter is made by Filtech and is a much better constructed filter.

The A01 and A02 filters are completely interchangeable. Each dealer is different. I use and recommend only the A01 filters for the reasons previously mentioned.

Honda-branded 0W-20 and 5W-20 is available in both full synthetic and synthetic blend. I use and recommend either one.

Are the 3.5 and 2.4 Honda filters the same size? I'm doubtful, but you never know with Honda.

I ask this because I read about the A01 and A02 filters when I got my Accord. Found a great price on genuine A01's on Amazon so I bought 20 of them :) That'd work out if they're compatible. What's the P/N on the G2 filter?

Ahhh another oil debate thread :) If there's room, i'd run the larger filter :) I just went thru a mess with Castrol with another vehicle that requires moly. I asked castrol how much moly was in their magnatec and they said mums the word and to refer to my owners manual.

Like others I have a ways to go before an oil change, but it's always nice to stay on top of things. More often I find myself going with OEM. On my S2K, STI, GT-R and Z06's I ran German Castrol 0w-40 but after the email exchange with castrol consumer relations i'm no longer a castrol customer. :)

The old days I would change the oil at 100 miles, and again at 500-600 miles and let her rip. Now most manufacturer recommend to leave the factory oil in for a longer period of time. If there was a way to change the filter without losing any oil that would be the way to fly.

The 15400-PLM-A01 and -A02 filters share the same external dimensions - the internal construction is different.

Manufacturers have been recommending filters only at every other oil change for many applications for decades. My grandmother's 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was one example. I posted a page from its owner's manual some time ago showing this recommendation.

I just went to the store and looked up what the 2016 Honda Pilot fuel filter size was and bought a K&N Performance Wrench-On Oil Filter that was listed.

Why use Honda OEM filters when other companies make high quality performance filters?

K&N Performance has the highest max oil flow rate of any filter out there.
Mobile Filters handle higher PSI than other filters.
Bosch Filters hold more contaminants.

If you change every other oil change and wait till oil change notifier pops up, i would go bosch as they hold more crud..
but i change oil filter every time so i want max flow and pick K&N

I've always used K&N in my cars and bikes. Also can't beat the integrated nut.
Is this the part # you came up with? K&N Part HP-1010.

Well I run Mobile 1 Full Synthetic with a Purolator L14610 since she was born "06 RTS". But change to the 0W-20 about 3 to 4 years ago when Honda told me it was safe to change to that weight. It is nice stocking just one filter type and gallons of oil that are the same for both vehicles. I have two filters left so my old RL anit goin anywhere till they have been used, could be awhile.

can't beat the oil deals at costco.

If an S2k filter will fit, i'd use it just for the extra capacity. I haven't got that deep into it yet but will soon. the corvettes were easy, there was only one filter. AC Delco UPF48R. the other engines i'd use a purolator pure one. didn't try the synthetic version filter, the thickness alone sounded hollow when you tapped on it and they didn't use the silicone base gasket. maybe they have improved it since but i'll cross that hurdle once it's time to change the oil :) I still haven't ordered my lift yet either :( torn between a 2-post and a 4-post, but that's a whole other thread :)

I asked Bernardi's parts guy whether the S2000 filter gets purchased for other engines or whether officially it fits the J35 and he said no to both. He said he'd never heard of using that filter on those engines. Doesn't mean much. I'm sure it does fit. I'd probably go for the K&N or something similar if I was going to stray from the Honda A01 though. The J35's oil volume has already been increased by Honda. Plex is probably right if you're going for something added, flow rate is probably the best value add.

Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra synthetic and Purolator Gold filters in all of my vehicles. These days, oils are so advanced that it really doesn't matter what you use as long as you change it regularly. Oil filters are inexpensive and it doesn't make sense to NOT change them every time. As was stated, if you have a warranty, you want to use an oil that meets API certification as stipulated. A simple oil analysis can let a manufacturer know which oil was used. If you, as the owner, knowingly went against the recommendation, it's grounds for denying a warranty claim. I'm not an attorney, but do have some experience in the corporate legal field. Heaven forbid if there is a catastrophic engine failure you may or may not have an issue with this. I would think most claims agents would want to see receipts showing that the oil was changed rather than what oil was used, but why open yourself to scrutiny?

I have a problem with the receipt business. I buy oil in 5 qt containers and most of my vehicles use the same oil. (but not the Civic). So how would I, as a DIY-er, prove my oil changes? You certainly couldn't track by receipt since buying oil is not the same as changing it. I keep meticulous records, but those can be pencil-whipped.

So how does a DIY-er prove to the court's satisfaction that the oil changes were indeed performed? (not that I have a horse in this race since all my vehicles are long out of warranty).

I keep meticulous records in a book that stays in the truck. Up until recently, I got oil for free since my dad worked at the blending/bottling facility for Shell/Pennzoil/QS. I don't have receipts since I didn't buy the oil. I would think that a Honda representative would understand the strictness of the maintenance done by simply having a conversation with me. I know what I'm doing and I've done my research. If I'm willing to keep a book showing everything that's been done on the truck from timing belts to wiper blades, they'd better understand I'm taking care of it. Not that it really matters because I've never had a warranty on it.
