Last Friday my truck suddenly started running rough and the engine icon started flashing. I pulled into a parking lot and put it in park and the light went off and the engine smoothed out. Yesterday when I started it up, the engine was running rough and the engine icon was on steady. I just got back from taking it to the dealer. I bought it in July of 2005 and the odometer is at 20,455 miles. I am waiting for a call to see what the problem is. Unfortunately it is out of the warranty period. Has anyone else encountered a situation like this? Could the O2 sensor be going out this soon? I am surprised to have this problem with less than 21,000 miles on the truck. I do not take it off road or on the beach. I had just filled the tank on Friday morning after the low fuel light came on and the truck took 18 gallons. I was told that it could be that the gas cap was not tightened, but the last time I forgot to tighten my cap, the light for the fuel cap came on, not the engine icon. It is at 50% oil life right now. I had it towed to the dealer.

Are you sure this is not a warranty repair? The powertrain is warranted for 5yrs/60K miles.
If the condition is caused by the failure of emission control components or results in excessive emissions it should also be covered.

I had a similar issue about 40,000 miles ago.. bad tank of gas was the culprit.

I was driving home, and needed to floor the truck to pass a slow mover, and once the rpms got over 3,500, the engine light began to flash, and the VTM-4 light came on and stayed on, truck ran rough, and had bogged down over 3,500 rpm.. Took it to the dealer who had it for about a week, had to get the fuel injectors replaced, & the tank of gas emptied.

good luck.

my check engine light has been on for ~2 weeks.

it runs smooth and shows no signs of trouble. I was in the neighborhood so I took it into the dealer to schedule a look-see, but they simply asked if it was running properly and when I said 'yes' they told me to check my gas cap(..as stated in the manual)and sent me on my way, but they did tell me to come back in 2 weeks if its still on.

sure enough it turned off for a couple days after I checked the gas cap, but then came back on shortly thereafter... I am guessing an o2 sensor or something in the emissions system, but im just gonna run it until it no longer

I have been told that the emission system is under warranty for 8 years or 80,000 miles. The last time it was in the dealers was this past September for an oil change. This is the first problem that I have had in 3 and a half years of use.

I filled it up with the same Costco gas as I have always used. Never had a problem before. I never use the gas from cheap stations, just Costco or Shell if I am on a road trip. I filled up at the end of November and again on January 2nd with 18 gallons of Costco gas.

I was using the same Marathon station for about a year before I got my tank of bad gas(never had a problem with them). Never went back to them(or any other Marathon station) again after the bad tankfull(they went out of business a few weeks later), and my RL has only seen BP/Amoco gas since.

Hopefully gas isnt your issue, if I remember correctly it cost me about $600.

Costco buys whatever gas they can get -- it's a crapshoot. Ditto with any other non-oil-company branded station. Even the branded stations will buy gas on the open market when they can't get their own brand. Gasoline is a fungible commodity.

But "bad gas" is often the result of a dirty holding tank. I never patronize a station where a tanker truck is in the process of filling the station's tanks (or has just completed that process). Filling the tanks stirs up the sediment (and/or water) on the bottom, and sediment will clog your gas filter and (if it's fine enough) your injectors.

Here in Humboldt county, all of our gas comes from the same tankers here. The difference's are what additives the bigger brands put in. All the stations here are usually 15¢ to 20¢ more than Costco typically. When you are paying some of the highest prices for fuel in the states, barring Hawaii, you shop for the lowest price. Some of the really cheap stations here are still higher than Costco.

Dragon,

If I read the quote above correctly, you went a month between fillups

Is it possible that condensation built up in the gas

I got one tank of gas from Costco back in the fall, and that's when I started having issues with rough running after start. it would take a few turns longer to start and then sputter for 2-3 seconds. It died on me twice. (I posted the rough start in another thread).

Long short is I bought some BG injector cleaner, ran it through two tanks og high test from BP and it straightened out, and now the only gas I get from Costco is, well you know. :DI still shop there and like the prices, I just don't buy their gas anymore.

I use Shell or BP.

I am a gardener and this is my off season. It also rained nearly half of December. In the winter I may only do a max of 30 miles a week and sometimes less than 20. I still have not heard from the shop yet and it is almost 4 pm here.

Martin I bumped up the P00420 code thread, this is what my RL came back with and the O2 sensor 463 code.

Neither car ran rough though and premium has seemed to keep the light off.

The Civic had the cat replaced under warranty, yours should be too.

Here is what is up with my truck. Two of the left side ignition coils are prematurely failing. The service rep said it is not unusual for a higher mileage ridgeline. But my ridgeline only has 20,455 miles on it. They called Honda and they OK'd them for replacing the ignition coils on them for a cost to me of only $50. The job otherwise would cost $270. The bad news is the parts have to be ordered and may not be in till Friday. They have one coil here. The place they would normally get them from in Oregon had their roof collapse to excess precipitation. Saving $220 actually makes the bad news of not being able to work for three days, not including yesterday, minimal. Anyone else have their ignition coils fail?

The dealer got the parts early and finished my truck today. They found codes P0301 and P0306, they cleared the codes and codes P0306 and P0303 came back. The engine started running smoother. They swapped the coils and the engine was running Okay. They rechecked the coils, coils for #5 and #6 cylinders needed replacing. They replaced those coils. .... These are the Tech comments. The service manager said one of the codes was for engine misfire. The cost was originally going to be $180 for labor and $270 for parts; they did the job goodwill and my cost was $50. The truck seems to be running fine so far.
