They are dated yeah but anymore being in my 30's I prefer something that is functional and affordable.
I'd love a true base model truck. No power locks, windows, steering, etc. Just an engine, a bench seat, and a bed. Then I could afford to have a truck and a car. Park the truck behind my house under a cover until I need to haul something. A friend of mine bought an old F-150 with 100,000 miles on it that had a dent in the side of it back when those types of trucks were affordable. He's had the thing for 15 years and he's put about 60,000 more miles on it. It still runs and drives great but it's not pretty. He only uses it when he needs a beater vehicle or to haul/tow something. That would be ideal for me. I'd much rather have something small, sporty, and fun for my daily driver....and have a truck for work.

Sadly, to buy a used truck in reasonable shape that's mechanically sound, you have to pay insane amounts of money.

A co-worker just bought a new Maverick, it is a very nice blue color, a lot lighter shade than Honda's. He didn't know which motor it had in it (LOL), but out the door it was only $42,000. He parked it beside my Ridgeline, and even he said my truck was a lot larger. His gas mileage is around 20 mpg, so I figure he has the e-boost motor. We'll see how it holds up.

The Maverick is Ford's new econobox since the Fiesta and Focus left the market - and it just happens to have an open bed.
I finally saw one parked in the Home Depot lot today. Color me unimpressed with the exterior styling. Seems pretty bland, but I am one who likes sharp edges and body lines. This one was too rounded off for me.

It is a "bah" styled pick-up, done on purpose--no doubt. But I give Ford credit for at least offering some nice colors!

2023 Maverick Tremor

  • Different front and rear springs and shocks
  • +1" ride height
  • Stronger half-shafts
  • Dual-clutch rear drive unit (similar to the Ridgeline's, but without overdrive) replaced single-clutch (similar to the CR-V and HR-V)
  • Heavy-duty transmission cooler
  • Trail Control (low-speed cruise control - aka "Crawl Control")
  • All-terrain tires
  • Unique wheels
  • Black badging
  • Orange accents
  • Available on XLT and Lariat trims
  • $2,995

You can get the Tremor package on a hybrid as well, just no AWD. Still seeing more and more of these. With a 5 foot ish bed the norm these days, you gotta start thinking can you make a 4.5 foot bed work?

I've seen dozens of Mavericks and Santa Cruzes in my area recently. I've yet to see one with anything in the bed or attached to the trailer hitch. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a Ridgeline hauling or towing except in photographs, either.

I do, however, see lots of Subarus with boats and bicycles strapped to the roof or hanging off the back.

There’s no way, unless he paid a huge market adjustment. I can add every accessory available to and AWD ecoboost model and not hit $40k. Does he have a window sticker available?

A friend of mine has a new F150. When he took it in for servicing, the dealer had a Maverick on the lot, he said it was a fully loaded one. Took it out for a drive and said the same thing I did, its not bad looking, doesn't drive too badly, but its so bloody small and this thing was the best part of $50k CAD so it well in the realm of a Ridgeline. These trucks make sense at ~$30k and I would still be turned off due to "legendary" Ford quality.

that is a TON of money for a maverik. Jesus!

Off-road suspension is a joke. The Pro4X Titan has Bilstein shocks on them, which failed on an off-road video posted on this forum with a Taco (also failed) and a Ridgeline. Granted we don't have Baja rated trucks, but we also don't have cheap shocks either.
I think it was the lack of independent suspension that doomed the Titan and Taco. They were on a rubboard road, and the constant stress on the shocks caused them to leak. If they had been rock climbing, different story.

I did see that video before I got my Ridgeline, and it was one of the things that sold me on its versatility.

Just a heads up for anyone considering buying a maverick before test driving one
I would certainly recommend that before signing over a check.
It doesn’t drive like a Ridgeline.. in my case a 07’
Not close to being as refined.
Nor should it
It drives like a $20,000 entry-level vehicle.
A bit stiff, a bit noisy.
You can feel lots of road bumps
It is what it is.
But if that’s what you’re looking for, and the MPG then it’s all good.
I think Ford did a great job in marketing these it seems so far.
It’s a neat compact truck that has some cool options to it at a great price.
To me, they seem to be an intelligent mix
But at those kind of prices there’s obviously compromises that were made.
For some, these compromises are worth the lower asking price.
For others probably not.
Long-term reliability who knows?
I think it’ll be in line with most modern vehicles.
Which means get an extended warranty!
You’ll be glad you did.
If you think you’re getting a Ridgeline at half the price, that’s simply not the case.
If Ford did a similar type construction as the R/L… a v6 power train (preferably a non-turbo option IMHO) with similar features and options, the prices would be fairly close I would imagine.
I have no clue what Fords overhead versus Hondas overhead is-but that’s obviously part of the equation.
But IMHO, Ford is aiming for a little bit different market.
Lots of first time vehicle buyers I would imagine.
