Any ideas?
Whatever you do - don't force it which can stretch cables, bend rods, and snap retainers. One downside of the accessory lock is that if you try to release the tailgate in either direction while it is locked, the mechanism can be damaged. The power tailgate lock that comes standard on the 2020-current model puts the release handles in "neutral" when locked so there's no chance of damaging the mechanism.

Opening it back up today, there was no clear culprit for the issue. Because the gold bracket has some play in location, I tried it as far right as it would go and as far left as it would go. Moving it as far left as possible seemed to have resolved the issue. I think the issue was related to tension on the purple cable. Time will tell, but I don't like that the system is dependent on an adjustment of maybe a millimeter or two.

Bringing this post to life after 5 months. I wanted more security for the back of my 2017 Ridgeline. Had to take it in last week to the dealership to fix the recall issue with the front hood and thought I’d have them install the lock. They quoted me for $125 for the parts and they never got back to me with a quote for labor so I just said, screw it, I’ll do it myself. Ordered the lock and handle from College Honda in Ohio and got to me in a week. I set aside 2 hours to get everything installed. I watched the two videos on Page 25 3-4 times each, so I felt prepared. It took me about 80 minutes to get it installed, but that was with me taking my time, dealing with my 5yo son, and fixing a mistake I made when replacing the purple clip (clipped it onto the wire BEFORE setting it in the lock itself, which would ensure the ball of the wire wouldn’t fit back in the hole. Took me about 10 minutes to get the purple clip off and do it correctly). The videos were SUPER helpful and I felt really confident going through all the necessary steps. Tailgate now locks and it still opens smoothly both ways like it was before I messed with the guts of the tailgate. I wouldn’t dare put anything of extreme value in the truck bed, but at least I have peace of mind to know things are protected back there with the lock and my North Mountain tonneau cover.

I wouldn’t call myself the most handiest guy, but this job was super-easy and fun. Thanks for everyone’s tips and hints in this thread and a big THANK YOU to the guys that created the two step-by-step videos!

I read through this thread (and some others) and am still not sure about this: is it possible to put the 2020+ POWER lock in a 2019, or is Pop-n-Lock the only option for powered tailgate lock?

So....reviving this thread in hopes anyone can help me find the correct part. I just installed the OEM manual lock, which was pretty easy, save for me being a complete jackass and trying to replace the wrong violet connector, which of course ended up in me breaking it...see picture below.

Does anyone know the part number for this? The rod connecting to it measures approximately 4mm as opposed to all the other ones which come in at 5mm, however I cant seem to find the damn thing in the parts website. According to the diagram, parts 12, 15, 32, 33, and 34 all look like they could work.

12, Part #: 72116-SV4-003 Snap, (Orange)......obviously not violet like the thing I broke

15, Part #: 72139-SR0-A01 Snap, (Violet).......I already tried this from the dealer, this is the other violet clip part that gets replaced with the beefier one from the new lock kit, where the cable is installed.

32, Part #: 74874-SJC-A02 Holder, Rod (5.0MM)

33, part #: 74874-SJC-A11 Holder, Rod (Dia5.0)

34, Part #: 74874-SJC-A21 Holder, Rod (Dia5.0)

These last three options seem like they are in the right place on the diagram, however they all measure too big for whatever this weird little purple rod is as illustrated in my picture. For the life of me I can't seem to locate that rod on the diagram...Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

@Balazsi This post help (open it, there is more than what is in the preview)? My guess is 74874-SJC-A02

If we are talking about the same purple rod holder (that snaps when swing mode is used) old part # 72139-SR0-A01 it was updated with the oem tail gate kit. That beefed up rod holder Is now under 74874-SJC-A02 for about $2.50-$5.00

I got one of those packages of clips from Pep Boys also - ready for the inevitable.

What set from pepboys did you get? Tried the other one and it didn't fit the rod. Specifically, it appears that the rod im connecting to is 4.2mm

I got this one. Unfortunately, there are no size markings on them.

These are also available, but the kit is pricey.

Just to confirm: I would need the lock & cylinder (part # 08Z07-T6Z-100D) and the color-matched handle from this list?

08Z07-T6Z-110E WHITE Diamond Pearl (NH-603P)
08Z07-T6Z-120E Lunar SILVER Metallic (NH-830M)

That is the part number I ordered for my lunar silver which included the handle, lock and clips. I had the cylinder lock in the kit rekeyed to match the ridge key before installing it. One less key to worry about. I think it was approximately $60.

I finally got fed up with my Pop-N-Lock locking tailgate handle's cheap lock cylinder and actuator and replaced it with the Honda locking handle.

I've removed and reinstalled the tailgate cap and cover on my tailgate about 6 times now (install Pop-N-Lock electric lock, repair Pop-N-Lock electric lock a few times, add Pop-N-Lock locking handle and finally replace Pop-N-Lock electric lock+handle) I'm looking forward to never opening my tailgate again!

To make it more difficult to remove a heavy object in an open bed or any object stored under a tonneau cover.
Thanks for answering my question.

I noticed mine locked with the truck, hence my confusion.

Did some research and it looks like models before 2020 all would open because they wouldn't lock from inside.

I need secure bed storage for retriever training equipment, the dogs are stored in the rear cabin. Last 4 trucks I've put on an ARE hard tonneau so I did that on the RL. I still have the old Tacoma with the extended bed and assumed I'd be cramped for space on the RL based upon spec numbers. However it appears to have more useful space than in the Taco. The ARE tonneau sits higher so adds to unable bed height and the width is better specially with no wheel well intrusion. However relevant to this thread, the electric lock option on the tonneau integrated perfectly with RL lock logic.

Here's all of the compiled, most relevant information for this. It may be handy if the OP consolidates the info in the first post. Hope it helps.

Installation Video Example 1:

Installation Video Example 2 From @Toolferone:

General info Video, Recoding a Honda Keylock:

Notes/Tips/Preparation:
  • Kit includes 2 new, independent keys, before installing decide optionally to have your new lock cylinder recoded by a locksmith to match current keys [Approx. $25~$65]
  • The lock you will be installing is a "manual only" lock, not actuated by electric locks
  • Installation is intermediate-easy, takes about 1 hr. If you work at a slower pace & follow along with a video
  • Mistakes I made:
    • I have a tendency to over-tighten... do not over-tighten on these (except maybe the screws holding the camera if needed. The threads everywhere are aluminum and will strip pretty easy if you try to "crank em". The instructions say only 6lbs to 7lbs of torque. So don't overdo it.
    • The locksmith I used to recode the lock made a very simple error putting the latch-post (where the rod connects) on 180 degrees wrong, I could not figure out why I couldn't get the handle installed correctly and it was an easy fix. just need to remove the retaining-clip (spring clip washer) and rotate the latch 180 degrees and squeeze the clip back on (pic below).
    • I didn't trust the instructions. I was an early Ridgeline owner and fought with instructions on the bed cover, replacement bumper at one time, and some other things. So, when I thought the instructions were starting to get strange, I watched the video instead to see how the others did it. But this time Honda made the instructions correct and the steps are accurate. They even indicate the pounds of torque for the screws. They didn't indicate any of the clips by color, but you can still figure it out. (Hint: White Clips are for new rods, one Purple clip replaces the existing long-neck cable clip, and you will detach the yellow rod clip momentarily)
  • Some other folks reported breaking the "NEW" 5mm Purple Rod Clip when installing, it cannot be ordered separately (the orig-old Purple Clip is too weak and will break if used)
  • The new camera screw holes are not tapped very well on some units and are extremely tough to tighten enough to secure the camera, they may need wax, graphite or oil. Mine was just fine though.
  • If you discover mysterious washers laying around, they were jarred out of the gate top rail-cap when removed (Middle Bottom) from @daktruckie99

Replacement parts (these parts are only needed "if" you break something or need to repair something additional to the kit above, the kit you order has everything you need):
Replacement Torx screws: P/N 90108-SJC-A00 - If you strip those in the the gate cover panel:
Replacement Control Rod Synchronizer "A": P/N 74870-T6Z-A01 - This is only mentioned as an issue by one person with an install from a dealer. It is not necessary unless there was damage or an issue if the gate is tough to open.
Replacement Lower Cable: P/N 74867-SJC-A00 -This is only mentioned as an issue by one person with an install from a dealer. It is not necessary unless there was damage or an issue if the gate is tough to open.
Replacement Purple and White Rod Clips: Cannot be ordered separately at the time of this writing, they only come with the kit. Try not to break them.
