immobilizer system 'gotcha'

Just wanted to give other ROC forum members a heads up to avoid a possible embarrassing situation. This may be outlined in the manual (I admit, I haven't RTFM lately - LOL) and I searched high and low throughout the forum on RFID and immobilizer and couldn't find anyone else that experienced it. If obvious, please forgive me. :)

Anyway, on with the story. The past two weekends, I had the family on a couple of jaunts with my '06 RTL. Shut it down but left the key in accessory position (so they could enjoy the tunes!) and came back a few minutes later. Truck would start but immediately shut down. Did this a couple of times with the same results.

The only way to get it running was to actually turn the key to off, remove key for a few seconds (like 15?) and once inserted and turned to start, she roared back to life as usual.

So I guess the bottom line is, the RFID in the key fob must 'forget' itself when it's in the accessory position for too long so when you go try to start it, it doesn't know it's the correct key. Removing it, resets and all is well.

I hope this saves others from a potentially embarrassing situation. Isn't technology wonderful?

:)

Hmmm, I guess I never considered that this might be a problem since removing the key for a few seconds, 'fixes' it (the truck starts).

So I guess you're saying it's not a 'feature' as I suspected? Anyone else out there ever experienced this or do I really have a potential problem?

Thanks Mr Bigs! I will have this checked out by the dealer next time I'm in.

For what it's worth, I've done both. Gotten out of the truck (drivers side) and back in after a few minutes and also not opened the drivers door. Same result, truck would not stay running.
I guess we can assume this issue also happens with your other key fob and valet key???????????

Just like MikeT, I sit in my truck waiting for my kids to get out of school with the key in the ACC position listening to the radio. It always starts right up and stays running.

Ditto here. I leave the radio playing and fire up after the kids get in and go without issue.

i sit in my truck listening to music sometimes up to 1 hour, the only thing with mine is it turns over but doesnt start for a few seconds

but then again i think my amp really is killing my battery when i have the car on with the radio and subs on the battery is about 13.5 volts (subs hit hard it gets to 12 volts at times), with just the radio on battery is at 11.8 volts. i will be getting a new battery this spring

Good point xridge. On second thought, does the fob battery have anything to do with the immobilizer chip? I don't think so, my civic had the immobilizer chip in the key with no battery. It didn't have keyless entry.
This would not be a good situation if the system relies on the fob battery. what if it dies and you don't have a spare key?

Same experience here from messing around with flip keys. When I got the key cut, but hadn't installed the the little black oblong chip, the truck would turn over to it's hearts content. Wouldn't spark into life though. I could however with it turning over put my old key next the ignition and it would start right up.

I listen to the radio the other night at the CVS while my wife went to shop. It was at least 15 minutes and when she came out , I turned the key and the engine started right up, no problems at all. When I some times clean the Ridge, I lower the windows and listen to the CD player in the acces. position and it starts up when I am ready. ?????????

#27 ·
I wish my wife would only take 15 minutes. :)

Experimenting with the other keys and lots of starts/stops, with/without listening to the radio, etc. It happened a couple of times on Saturday (from a 'cold' start) but yesterday was flawless.

So something is going on. It's not consistent and not really repeatable at this point. I'll keep everyone posted as I continue to troubleshoot.

Thanks!

Or did he somehow get lost in the fuel pump relay recall and is now getting the symptoms?????

Thanks for the thought. However, if this is the VIN range that applies to this recall: VIN Range: 6H511215 thru 6H528659, then it doesn't apply to my vehicle since my VIN is not within that range (it's higher). Which would explain why I never received this recall in the mail either.

But I will ask next time I'm in since this could very well be a symptom of the problem, sure sort of sounds like it.

Thanks!

Looks like the only one that is going to be embarrassed is yours truly. LOL

Let me explain myself:

After bowling on Monday night, it happened again, first time in a few weeks. But I was paying attention and here's what I think is happening: Sometimes I start it with my thumb and middle finger (thumb on the bottom of the key). When it starts, I let the key go and there appears to be enough spring tension that if you're not holding it, it will go back enough just past the run position so that it will kill (as if you shut it off but you didn't!). Hope that makes sense ...

So, thanks for all the input to this thread. I don't think I would have figured out that it was operator error without all the other thoughts and opinions from the other ROC forum members out there.

Damn, been driving for 31 years now and you'd think I'd know how to start a car! :)

Hey, don't feel bad or . I sometimes asked (what I think are silly) questions, but if I don't know the answer then... The guys/gals here are, as you've noticed, great with info/knowledge.
Who knows maybe someone out there is scratching their head right now trying to figure out the answer to the same question you had!
