Noise when backing up in reverse

Every morning when I back up in reverse, i hear a noise. I don't think it is a pad on rotor noise. It is like a squeal and it does not make the noise when going forward or stepping on the brakes in drive. There is no vibration in the steering wheel from warped rotors. It has been get louder over the past 10 days. I do not believe it is coming from the engine bay. Any suggestions what it might be? My 06 is my daily driver at 157K plus miles since May 05.

Yes, the brake squealer is a wear indicator. But it should be happening in D, not just reverse.

Have you checked your brake pad wear lately? Do you only hear the noise when applying brakes while in reverse? Do you still get the noise if rolling backwards down an incline with the tranny in N?

Could be some of the cats or skunks that had previously been roaming the neighborhood - especially if the squeal is followed by a thump. Give it a few more days and they'll all be gone. If, after then, you still hear the squeal, check the brakes next

Dude thats totally a breakpad wear warning! Ive heard that a million times. if its not that something very thin is dragging on your brakes somewhere.

There's an odd hum that seems to go with that squeal. You can confirm brake pad wear by jacking up your truck and pulling the wheels off to get a good look at both sets of pads... inner and outer.

Better yet, remove the lower caliper flange bolt and pivot the assembly up, pull out the pads and measure them. The wear limit is 1mm.

If it's not the brakes, then keep looking! Put it up on 4 jackstands and crawl underneath. Maybe some debris is caught in the brake dust shield or something.

If you need to replace your pads, there should be no need to turn the rotors unless the rotor is damaged or if you have shimmy under braking.
Thanks guys looks like I will be getting some brake pads after all. Now it comes down to what brand.

I also go OEM on the pads. They brake well and have minimal dust. Plus, they are ceramic.

I was going to say the same thing. There are threads here that discuss the pad replacement process. It is pretty simple. $320 sounds pretty high to me for a simple pad replacement.

Use the Thermo Quiet pads. They are they best.

Couldn't hear the sound well, but mine made a sound like wetting your finger and rubbing it around the rim of a glass, a hollow kind of ringing sound. It was not the wear tabs, but it was the pins on rear pads. They were sticking and only when in reverse did they make sound due to the pressure on the pads. It stopped when going forward. Re lube the pins, use the Thermo Quiet pads, good to go!
