VTM-4 issue

My VTM-4 light on dash comes on after I start the vehicle and put it in gear. I tried pushing the VTM-4 button on dash and it doesn't do anything, no little LED light nothing. If I turn the truck off and then back on the VTM-4 light is off until I put it in gear, then comes on.
Any ideas on what the cause of this is?

Do you mean this indicator?

If that's it, check your OM for more information. You likely need to get it checked by a competent shop.

I'm just seeing this thread for the first time, but I was going to comment that it could either be a failure in the VTM-4 system OR a different failure that has disabled the VTM-4 system causing the light to illuminate. In your case, it was obviously the latter. Glad you got it fixed!

I don't think I would have connected the dots to align a VTM-4 light with an O2 sensor. Wow.

Certainly. Sometimes, a DTC in one system will set a DTC in another system. In the case of the 1G, "When the VTM-4 control unit senses abnormalities in the input or output systems, the VTM-4 indicator in the gauge control module will usually come on..." The PCM is an input and output system for the VTM-4 control unit. The troubleshooting information says to scan the vehicle for DTCs and if there are any fuel and emissions DTCs present to troubleshot those first and any VTM-4 DTCs last since as a result.

On the 2G, as another example, a transmission fault will disable the Blind Spot Information System (The rear cross traffic alert feature of the BLIS needs to know when the transmission is in reverse and if there is a transmission fault the data may not be valid so the BLIS disables itself and displays a warning message).
