Whirring/whining When Turning Steering Wheel

Hello,

I have 2006 Ridgeline with about 78K miles.

Here are the symptoms I am experiencing. After I have been driving for awhile (say at highway speeds for a period of 20 minutes or more), I notice that when I am idling or driving at low speeds, there is a pronounced whirring/whining noise emanating from the front of the vehicle. It is particularly pronounced when the steering wheel is turning and gets loudest when turned to one extreme or the other, quieting down quite a bit (but not going away altogether) when the wheels are straight.

I have regular maintenance (including the fairly major 60K factory recommended as well as the regular 5K oil changes). I would be grateful for any information on what it is and what I should do about it.

Thank you!

Thanks for replies. I am no expert, but don't think it is related to wheel bearings or the "creaking" thread. I am familiar with wheel bearing issues, and my problem is even at idle (i.e. wheels not rotating) when turning the steering wheel.

I suspect it is power steering related (didn't want to say that as I was hoping people would be able to tell from my description), but wanted other people more knowledgeable to chime in.

As far as having my power steering fluid replaced, I am pretty sure they did that at the 60K (I will have to review the receipt), so that would be pretty fresh change.

Any additional insights appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think the power steering fluid was changed. It sounds an awful lot like the problem I had about a year and a half ago. It was quiet when I was sitting still, but the second I turned the wheel at lower speeds, it sounded like a bad alternator whine. Foolishly, I replaced my alternator without even testing it and the noise persisted. It was worse when it was cold outside. I went and got three bottles of Honda ps fluid and did a full change. Noise totally went away and has not come back since. I would start with that. Check your fluid. If it is dark brown and smells bad, it needs changed. If the dealership said they changed the fluid, I would suspect they just drained the reservoir and filled it back up. Do a full change and see if it helps.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear it was a simple fix.

I've heard it's an issue in certain model Accords, too. I'm sure it was simple to do, too. Still can't hurt to flush out the fluid and get some fresh stuff in there.
