Bed Cover Suggestions for New Ridgeline Owner

Hello, I'm Max from Jacksonville, FLA and I am the proud new owner of a 2022 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E!

I was fortunate enough to find one in the beautiful sonic grey color with roof racks and running boards. So far I'm very happy with the purchase, and excited to be a part of the Ridgeline community!

The only thing I would like to add onto it is a bed cover. Does anyone have any brands they like or suggestions for adding a bed cover to a Ridgeline?

Thanks!

BAK Revolver X4s is what I have and I still love it. I posted some photos in this thread (I know the title of the post will throw you off, but I didn’t know what I was doing at the time (and still don’t!)):

These threads ought to get you started: Bakflip MX4, Undercover UltraFlex, Lomax, Honda OEM, Retrax, Bakflip Revolver X4S (which I own).
  • The first choice you need to make is whether you want FULL access to the trunk and very few covers offer that.
  • Do you want a roll-up or folding cover.
  • Do you want a fold-up cover where only two/thirds of the cover folds up, leaving the third section always down.
  • Do you want a cannister type cover

Great post of decision criteria & existing ROC tonneau info hoards!

I would add a couple of decision points:
  • Do you want a soft cover or a solid one?
  • Are you OK with rails semi-permanently mounted on the bedsides?
The soft covers are cheaper to acquire and it seems like many use/like them. Obviously they're a little less protective, security-wise.

The OEM is only tonneau I know of that doesn't require rails to be installed, but it's also one of the 2/3-open folding covers that you noted.

Congratulations, nice color. After reading dozens of very informative posts on here, I was almost paralyzed by the number of choices and considerations. Reading people's experiences was very helpful I finally made a decision and ordered a Truxedo Sentry CT (should arrive next week).

Aside from which brand and model of cover, one of the suggestions that paid off was to contact the seller to see if they will give you a discount. Based on positive reviews on ROC, I emailed TruckAlterations.com to see if they would sell at a lower price and they did. I'm guessing other reputable sellers might too.

Spend time contemplating the different configurations of each style & how you expect to use it.
I like the O.E. one. The trunk opens far enough to get in & out of it. It doesn't flop around in the wind. I can remove to whole thing in minutes. There are no modifications required to attach, just add the brackets under the tie downs.

I opted for the Fas-Top tonneau/soft topper combo. My issue with just a tonneau is that Ridgline doesn’t have a very deep bed. For example, the cooler I own wouldn’t fit under the tonneau. But I didn’t want to spend thousands on a topper, and still wanted full bed access. So this seems like a good solution.
So far, the system has worked great.

You can save 100's by getting the North Mountain, full access, roll up cover off Amazon for a few hundred bucks, installs in 30 minutes, completely removable if need be and since you are in Florida will last a 8-10 years if you garage the car. The WeatherTek side window vent shades are a bunch cheaper than OEM and are "stick on" - do not buy the "in channel" versions no matter how cheap. They're nothing but trouble.

I am in JAX too! I went with the BAK X4S cover and love it! Very sleek, low profile and high-quality with a 5-year warranty. Highly recommend! Stay away from the OEM and any cover without a low profile to the bed rails. I think they look like crap and deter from the look of the truck. They may work well, but so do many others that have a far better design.

I've used the "stick on" vent shades on 5 vehicles over the years without a single issue; the "in channel" versions are butted into the window track up against the weatherstripping and the Honda windows can sense resistance and will sometimes go inoperative due to the interference and these shades aren't the best for your weatherstripping either. The "stick ons" can also be removed later if desired and a bit of Goo-Gone or adhesive remover will get the 3M tape residue off. Its the same tape that many cars use to attach emblems nowadays.

It's all about what you like my friend. I think the stick on look like crap and I don't like sticking anything to my vehicles...but that's me. The in-channel, like the WT and other brands, will give resistance at install. After a day or two, there is no more resistance and they work wonderfully well. I only use WeatherTech...excellent quality and zero issues over many many years. They don't damage the weatherstripping either. Some stick on types require, or highly recommend, an adhesive promoter (usually comes with it) before sticking them on the vehicle. That will not come off with Goo-Gone and will leave a stain on the vehicle if the visor is attached to a rubber/plastic surface versus chrome trim. If you like sick on, then do what tickles your fancy my friend :)

After reading a number of reviews, I went with a Lomax supplied by a Canadian vendor (I live in Canada). This review was very helpful:

Lomax Review: A Near-Perfect Trifold Tonneau for the G2 Ridgeline, PART I | Honda Ridgeline Owners Club Forums

It is a simple rigid tri-fold on which the front section always stays down. I didn't want to attach extra fixtures to the cab to hold the front section up. It is very easy to remove if I need to use the full open bed. It has an aluminum frame that appears quite strong, so you can throw stuff on top of it temporarily. I'm not interested on actually carrying anything on top of it, since doing so means you can't actually open the cover - just like any bed cover.

The trunk opens almost fully, losing only about 2" of travel of the lid when open. For my use, that has not been a problem.

As the review shows, it is not difficult to install.

It has no lock of its own, but it would be a little difficult to open it when the cover is latched and the tailgate is closed and locked. I live in a relatively rural area, so I don't expect problems. In a large urban area, I might be more concerned about catalytic converter theft, which seems to be a thing now.

I recommend the Bak Flip MX4, this is my second tonneau from them. I bought my first RL a 2011 RTL new from local Honda dealer and installed a Bak Flip tonneau within the first year, kept the bed reasonably dry… might have been a small wet spot after driving through heavy rain at highway speeds or a trip th4rough the car wash, but for the most part dry.
In January I traded up for a 2023 RL Black edition and quickly installed a new Bak FLIP MX4 purchased from bakFLIP.com. The design has changed a bit, the top is much lighter making it easier to flip, and the rear most top panel is designed to not require the tailgate to be closed prior to closing the tonneau. I like the hard type tonneau over the soft or roll type because the cover does not need to fully closed or rolled… I can transport lumber or items longer than the RL bed by opening a single panel sliding the lumber in the bed then folding the cover back to secure the load, or when hauling can open or close panels as needed.
A shout out to Catlin at BAK industries customer care (Bak industries is the manufacturer, while bakflip.com is a reseller) Anyhow I had an issue with a bowed side rail which kept the panel closest to the tail gate from latching correctly. After sending photos and explaining the issue, I received a message from John Soper | BAK Industries Customer Service Manager telling me new side rails and gaskets have been shipped.
Thoroughly satisfied

Cool looking Truck!

Thanks for the info, I just picked up my new 23 RTL-E HPD (White with Bronze Wheels). Can you fully open the trunk?

I'm looking for hard cover, trifold or hard rolling that will allow for full access to the trunk.

Any leads to discounts on the OEM cover?

I would suggest the Truxedo Pro X15 as well (https://truxedo.com/pro-x15).

I originally had the trifold OEM cover but switched to the Truxedo because it gave me more flexibility. I roll it up and have more usable bed space than with the OEM cover and removing the cover when needed is easier than with the OEM. Finally, it is lighter.

That is why I chose the X4S which rolls up all the way to the cab and does not block the view through the back window.
